Wompanoag Model Village
The girls started off Social Studies in 3rd grade homeschooling with a unit on the Wompanoags. First they did research and learned about different aspects of their culture (food, music, clothing, games, lodging). They each did a little presentation on a topic they researched. They also learned to sing and play some traditional Wompanoag music.
Then we went on a field trip to Moose Hill to gather materials for their model village construction. Kenton also read them a book on Wompanoag life during our picnic.
Then the girls started constructing their village. They made people, crows, a mishoon, and artifacts out of sculpey.
They constructed a summer and winter wetu out of the materials they had gathered.
Then we cooked a bunch of traditional Wompanoag recipes (slightly modernized) and the girls drew pictures and sent letters about what they'd learned.
We finished off the unit with a field trip to Plimoth Patuxet where the girls spoke with people from the Wompanoag tribe, saw a three sisters garden, watched traditional cooking and a mishoon being made, and walked through real wetus.
